Baltasar Gracian

January 8, 1601 - December 5, 1658

Son of a doctor, Balthasar Gracian became a Jesuit who's behavior, in the pulpit and through his writings, was most often met with displeasure and reprimands from the Jesuit order. Gracian is representative of the Spanish Baroque literary style, Conceptismo. an important theoretician, Gracian is considered a poet through his playing with words and phrases in rhetorical style. The Art Of Worldly Wisdom is a collection of maxims with commentary that is often surprising in it's ability to connect with continued intellectual depth and insight to people hundreds of years in Gracian's future.

Gracian's Birds

Bird portraiture is challenging and taking license to anthropomorphize the quirky ways of my photographed subjects is fun.  Creating backyardbird.us is now a passion.

Gracian's Birds is an extension of my portraiture, using the maxims written by Balthasar Gracian in 1653, The Art Of Worldly Wisdom, to add anthropomorphized commentary.
